Shed-roofs have a single slope. They are identified as skillion, mono-pitched, or lean-to roofs globally. They are suitable for industrial sheds, residences, patios, terraces, etc.

Proposed Cafe for Kasarwadi Wilderness Camp, featuring breaking of masses using the shed-style roofs with Steel hollow sections and Steel sheets

Shed roofs are budget-friendly and grant clear-span properties at half of the conventional roof weight. They are quick to assemble and thus, lower construction costs. Though, shed roofs can be assembled with different materials, steel tube framing and steel roofing sheets appear modern and are economically serviceable.

The Modern Shed Roof Design

Shed roofs replace the attic space and propagate luxurious, multifaceted clerestory windows along roof sides for light as in the Bent Annexe by Bent architecture. For high rainfall and coastal regions of India, TATA Structura Z+ Galvanized Structural steel tubes that not only resist corrosion, but also uphold safety and aesthetic are favourable.

Farmhouse by Ar. Amrut Deshmukh, Esprit Architecture, Pune:

The thin-sectioned shed-roof design has an off-beat profile. It challenges the extreme climate, maintains the airflow, and stands differently.

This steel-shed is branded with Asian White coloured, 0.47mm thick TATA Durashine steel sheets. It encourages rainwater to channelize towards double-time gutters, stands stiff for weather protection, and blends with the surroundings.

Steel shed roofs also minimize palettes to make houses contemporary as in the Lincoln Street Project by Moontower design studio. A blackened steel shed-roof design that exposes corrugated metal walls is preferred for the project.

Not only does a shed roof provide natural light, but also eases out the process of adding extensions to an existing industrial building. These roofs, termed as lean-to roofs, are quick additions, while hollow steel tubes ease fabrication.

TATA STRUCTURA Steel tube framing provides a lightweight solution for such industrial extensions. The flexible tube can also be bent over to create curvilinear sheds for out-of-box designs.

Shed-roof addressing the privacy control:

A contemporary home in Austin by Lake Flato architects shows a concern for privacy but a demand for natural light. Thus, the steel shed-roof design cloaks elevated walls with side-framed windows.

Example of a shed-roof for controlling solar-gain:

The lightweight steel angles itself to welcome the winter sun in tropical climates. It passively heats the snow braced temperate homes. In India, steel shed roofs would lower the direct solar gain and respond to tropicality.

Shed-roof for harvesting natural resources

Solar panels pinned on sun receiving slopes provide energy. India, blessed with ample sunlight, can opt for these shed-roof designs for energy generation. Not only do shed roofs collect rainwater, but help reduce the carbon foot-print of the house.

Shed-roof design for communal buildings

The oval shed-roof design is used for small-scale buildings like greenhouses and seatings and using formable TATA Structura steel tubes eases their framing. The design elapses around a circular form with rounded edges.

The Patio Shed Roof Design

These shed-roof designs, adhering to city-codes and precise engineering, owe their beauty to the utility. These can be assembled with the help of simple steel tubes that support galvanized steel roof panels as in the Modern Farmhouse by Gast Architects.

The Garage Shed

Aesthetic but functional, minimalist, thick galvanized steel is pitched at 6-12° and bolted with heavy-duty knee connectors while designing a garage shed.

As we move towards a sustainable future one with electric cars, renewable energy solutions; steel shed-roofs with solar panels and rainwater collectors could gain momentum as charging facilities world-wide. Steel shed-roofs also fit the aesthetic of the in-trend container homes. Their design facilitates the running of appliances, rainwater collection, calamity resistance and is economical.
