Diamond Sculpture made with circular hollow sections

The Diamond Sculpture is conceived to depict the actual Jubilee Diamond shape of Lady Meherbai Tata. The structure is interactive, which provides access to the visitors. To achieve this, the architect and structural engineering team have opted for steel as the main construction material with proper PU paint system. The PU paint system is used for providing required life and easier maintenance of the sculpture. The lighting system is designed and installed by Philips Lighting using latest lighting technology. The structural design and detailing has been done using latest design software (STAAD & Tekla).

The main challenge faced by the fabrication team was the profile cutting of the Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) as per part drawings. These individual members are connected to the main frame, which is also a CHS section. This requires high precision profile cutting. Internationally, this cutting process is being done using automatic robotic arms with usage of plasma or laser technology. However, due to the non-availability of these machines locally, we have executed this operation in the manual process, which in turn took more time and resources.
